You see this is why I love this game so much. This is why a lot of people miss this. Sure it doesn't always have to be dark but don't make your story boring.. TTYD is what happens when people actually care about making a great damn story along with captivating characters that we can love and nurture.

**SPOILERS AHEAD** Finally beat the final boss last night, having never played the GC original (took 3 attempts; turns out having the right badge buildout and stocking up on the right items does make a difference lol), so rather appropriate timing that this appears in my feed today. Chapter 3 is tied with Chapters 1, 4, 5, 7 and 8 for my favourites. In a game filled to the brim with dark elements running contrary to what most would expect from a typical Mario adventure (the Marioverse's answer to the Mafia, missing parents and man-eating dragons, realistic domestic abuse, literal identity theft just to name a few), what Grubba does is imho on par with the Shadow Queen herself in terms of pure evil despite having no association with her (or the X-Nauts) whatsoever. It's also a good illustration (barring Chapter 8) of the Crystal Stars themselves being a netural tool, being used as their present owner sees fit (I also think this applies to Doo_liss and his 'piggyfying' curse). A real unsettling glimpse at what these things are really capable of. Either way, it was beyond cathartic to utterly whup his ass to avenge Prince Mush, King. K, Bandy Andy and the other unnamed missing fighters. As you allude to, he said in a prior cutscene that 5 had gone missing 'this year'. The implications of that line on it's face were bad enough, but it's even worse after his secret is exposed, as it all but spells out that Grubba is half a step removed from being a flat-out serial killer. And we never see any of those other fighters emerge from the star, so who knows if their spirits are still contained in the star like Mush's was or how many of them Grubba claimed before Mario and Co. stopped him. God, this game gets dark af and I love it for that. I can now say that with confidence, having finally played through it for myself.

0:32 I must say, there are a lot of horror elements to the Mario & Luigi games, especially Partners in Time, I thought you would mention it. It’s fascinating how the game can easily switch its tone, to make you understand the stakes behind the story.

I love the epic slow-mo they added when you kill a boss. Makes it so funny, especially when they get killed by a stage hazard, superguard, or in this case, an overcharged slap.

One thing I like a lot about Chapter 3 is the way it gives us a more direct look at what Crystal Stars can do. The game isn't shy about telling you that Crystal Stars are neutral objects that can be used for good or ill depending on who's handling them, but Chapter 3 is one of the only times in the game where we get to see someone other than Mario utilising this power (have your arguments here about whether or not Doopliss was powered up by his Crystal Star - I believe he was). And what a use it was! Grubba wasn't just sucking the life force out of people, he was eradicating them entirely! Even if you take the angle that the fighters' bodies got kind of "stored" in the Crystal Star, that still meant they were literal disembodied spirits, and also raises the concern that after enough time of Grubba using their power, their bodies would fade away permanently or something like that. With the later context that the Shadow Queen made the Crystal Stars, Chapter 3 is a really quite chilling glimpse into just what these things are capable of.

Now have a headcanon that Prince Mush is Toad Master's disciple and that he basically learned everything from him
